About SEAACA:

The Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA) serves 14 cities and just under 900,000 residents in Southeast Los Angeles and Northeast Orange counties. We are a team of professionals dedicated to animal care and control, working around the clock to provide the best possible outcomes for lost, ill, and injured animals. From cats and dogs to opossums, chickens, ducks, snakes, hamsters, rabbits, and more. SEAACA takes in over 1,000 animals every month. SEAACA is a Joint Powers Authority comprising five main divisions: Animal Control, Animal Care, Animal Health, Community Engagement, Licensing and Customer Service. Together, our job is to help as many animals as possible find good homes. Last year, we placed nearly 91% of our live-intake dogs.

Reports To: SEAACA Manager

Definition: State of California licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. When onsite, SEAACA’s staff veterinarian is responsible for maintaining the health of all animals in the care of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA).

Essential Duties/Functions:

Examines animals for prospective adoptions to ensure health condition.
Vaccinates animals against Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Upper Respiratory Infection, and other diseases common to canines and felines.
Performs spay and neuter surgeries.
Collaborate with Chief Veterinarian to ensure SEAACA’s operations are conducted using appropriate and up-to-date medical and surgical practices.
Maintain a culture of collaboration and teamwork among the entire Veterinary Services team.
Examines and treats injured or sick animals that come into SEAACA’s care.
May monitor quarantine of animals that have been involved in a bite.
May assist field officers with cruelty investigations or rescues where medical intervention is necessary.
Participate in euthanasia decision making. Train and certify staff to perform euthanasia procedures.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Examinations:

Graduation from a college with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California.
No felony convictions or convictions of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Valid California Driver’s License, California Identification Card or the ability to obtain one.
Demonstrated excellent surgical skills.
Strong interpersonal communication skills.
High emotional intelligence.
Ability to effectively communicate in writing.
Effective time management skills with ability to work independently.
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
High attention to detail.
Proficiency in various computer programs including Microsoft Office.
On-call availability.
Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
Must satisfactorily pass a background investigation.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Surgical procedures for spaying and neutering of canines and felines and for emergency treatment of injured animals.
Knowledge of modern techniques for treating various animals for common diseases and injuries.
Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with citizens and staff.

Physical Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Must be able to regularly lift, carry, restrain and capture animals of various sizes, weights, and temperaments. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with reasonable accommodation. Subject to animal bites or scratches. Handle and restrain animals. Stand for extended periods of time to perform veterinary procedures such as surgeries. Work performed in high noise level areas, indoors and outdoors. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, anesthesia, pharmaceutical compounds, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces.

On a continuous basis, sit at a desk in front of a computer screen; intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and computer keyboard on a daily basis; standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching to access files and materials; and intermittently lift or carry boxes of various weights. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to perform repetitive motions associated with medical and surgical care.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in high quality/high volume spay/neuter setting.
Knowledgeable of animal forensics.
